Project Update: Project forges ahead as roof and tower near completion.

There has been tremendous progress on site with roof construction and the rebuilding of the clock tower now nearing completion.

The roof build began in November last year with 5 of the giant roof trusses craned into place. With the timber structure now complete, the final slates are being laid on the side pitches, with the circular roof lights now formed and ready to be covered. Meanwhile, on the tower, the handsome stone parapet is now complete and the four clock faces installed.

This site update video clip shows the roof work in progress.

You can also see contractors working on the final stages of the clock tower at top level, which includes the work on the tower balustrade which is now almost complete.

We have been exceptionally lucky not to have sustained any damage during storm ‘Eunice’. This is a testament to the quality of work undertaken by Coniston Ltd who are the main contractor for the project.

Chairman of the trust, Will Palin says…

“We were all biting our nails as storm Eunice swept over the Island, battering the scaffolding of Dockyard Church. Thankfully, other than losing some of the scaffolding sheeting, the roof structure and tower stood firm. We are relieved that the building has come through its first great test unscathed.

We are thrilled to be so close to the completion both of the main part of the new roof structure and the clock tower. Our contractors have been working tremendously hard through some tricky conditions and we look forward to the scaffolding coming down from the tower to reveal the beautiful stone restoration work and the new clock faces.”
